We’re approaching the end of 2020, the year where I had hoped to get into a groove of releasing more music. There I stood on the edge of winter and in the middle of a pandemic I couldn’t see the end of. I wanted to get back to making music with friends, figuring out how to create some processes to help others hear the songs I was writing.  When I got down to it,

it seemed I was what was in the way.

In order to keep some perfectionism at bay and make it easier to churn out some tunes, I decided to give myself some rules for a single-take imperfect live-ish project.  There are tons of folks doing this in really brilliant ways. My main hope was to share these songs that have only been heard by small audiences with little hope of folks hearing them again. Perhaps these versions will inspire your wonder or maybe your ire. Either (and more) fine with me.  One take. No tracks or loops (though I’m still considering allowing some live looping).  Only the lumpy mix of great and terrible gear I’ve got at my disposal.

Just me and my lonesome.  Live.

Here’s the first go at it- it’s a song inspired by conversation Fabric is having, cultivating some hope and forward gazing. I sure need that. I can say it’s just 2020 and we’re almost through it, but hard stuff will keep coming. Resilience will be demanded. New patterns, new rhythms, new ways of life and community. Here’s to that “something new” on the horizon that’s coming to be. May you find peace in the waiting and in the laboring.

Lyrics:

No we can’t go on the way we used to
No we can’t go on the way we used to
No we can’t go on the way we used to
No we can’t go on the way we used to
Find something. Find something new

Something new is being born
What it is; a mystery, oo
For all the pressure builds to something
Something we’ve never seen, something new, oo

In the dead of night what’s sown in sleeps
The fallow now hallowed or so it seems
Not to diminish the grateful hearts
But when the constant of the buzzing starts
There is no season we can see
There is no life, no breath to breathe

Something new is being born
What it is; a mystery, oo
For all the pressure builds to something
Something we’ve never seen, something new, oo

Push and breathe, find your feet
We all need it in our need (oo)
Push and breathe, when you’re weak
We all have you, we all need you

As something new is being born
What it is; a mystery, oo
For all the pressure builds to something
Something we’ve never seen, something new, oo

Something new is being born
What it is; a mystery, oo
For all the pressure builds to something
Something we’ve never seen, something new, oo
